I have worked in public relations and communications for 17 years. My professional career began when I was a news reporter for WYMT-TV in Hazard, Ky. Currently, I am the communications/public relations manager at Berea College in Kentucky where I have picked up 18 CASE awards along the way.

EXPERIENCE

Public Relations/Communications Manager
5/2002 – Present,  Berea College, Berea, KY

  • Direct and implement public relations strategies for various audiences, including media, community members, on-campus constituencies (faculty and staff), trustees, alumni, and visitors.  Strategies include: news releases, feature articles in the college magazine, faculty/staff electronic newsletter, development and ongoing content management of the institutional Web site, a database-driven electronic news service, and video production projects for media and visitors.  Managerial duties include directing six staff members.
  • Provide leadership on the Campus Information Resource Committee and the Athletic Affairs Committee.  Provide support for admissions and fund-raising activities.
  • Received 18 state and regional awards from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education for feature writing, news management, Web sites, and video projects.

Event Coordinator
11/1998 – 12/2001,  Keeneland Center, Lexington, KY

  • Managed all administrative aspects of a conferencing center catering to regional and national organizations.  Responsibilities included budgeting, billing, marketing the center regionally, scheduling events, and managing support staff (housekeepers, caterers, and audio-visual technicians). Coordinated special event details including full-service catering, custom meeting room setups, audio-visual requirements, hotel arrangements and any special requirements.  Coordinated audio-visual equipment usage and managed the implementation of leading-edge audio-visual equipment including touch screen technologies.  Expertise in audio-visual multimedia equipment including projection, broadcast, video editing, video conferencing (satellite, T1, and ISDN), and recording equipment.
  • Managed special PR projects including Web site, video productions, and strategic PR campaigns.
  • Received the Kentucky Society for HealthCare Public Relations and Marketing’s highest award for Web site production and a feature video.
  • Increased business 75 % in the center’s third fiscal year by hosting more than 1,200 events.

Prevention Specialist
6/1996 – 10/1998,  Univ. of KY Injury Prevention Center, Lexington, KY

  • Produced community-based public health interventions and communications strategies targeting the causes of preventable injuries.  Managed regional meetings of local officials and citizens to coordinate the dissemination of community public health information.
  • Earned a national recognition from the National Commission Against Drunk Driving for an extensive public relations campaign co-produced with local high school students.  Communications strategies utilized print, billboard, television and radio public service announcements.
  • Secured a $40,000 grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for a community education program.

Reporter
9/1992 – 5/1995,  WYMT-TV, Hazard, KY

Produced news script, conducted video interviews, shot video footage, produced news and sports video segments and presented ‘on-the-air’ daily on the news set.  Produced a feature video series exploring the ‘Backroads of Kentucky.’
